About "temari ball" (temari - てまり) :

Temari (hand ball) is a ball wich was first a child toy andi is today a kraft made for decoration purposes. Temari balls are very colourfull with geometric embroidered designs.

The temari ball might have a common origin with the kemari game. Kemari is a kind of football in fashion during the Heian Period (794 to 1185). Played by several players, the aim of the game is to keep the ball in the air, a bit like footballers of today when they train. The ball called 'mari' is made of deer skin.

Both temari and kemari have a Chinese origin.
