About "red cow Akabeko" (aka beko - 赤べこ) :

Akabeko is a traditional red cow (or ox) 'toy' from the Aizu region (north of Hunshu). It is made of papier-mâché painted in red. The head of the cow hangs on a string and moves with the air or when the toy is moved. The legend claims that this cow was devoted to the Buddha. It is a famous souvenir to bring back from the Aizu region (Fukushima) and is meant to protect against illnesses.
