About "Shishi" (shishi - 獅子) :

The shishi lion is a mythological creature which originates from China. In Japan, the shishi is considered having a playable temperament and the ability to protect people. Shishi lions statues are found in most shinto shrines garding the entrance.

'Shishimai' is the Japanese Lion Dance. Several people disguise under a shishi constume and imitate it's movements. This dance originates also from China but the Japanese have developed their own style. There are many different kinds of Shishimai dance in Japan depending on the region. There are styles with two or three people making up the lion as well as dances involving two lions. Usually Taiko (Japanese Drums) provide the music for the dance. Shishimai dances are mostly held in the spring and fall as they are performed to ensure a good harvest. Shishimai dances are also performed around New Year.
