About "cherries" (sakuranbo - サクランボ) :

The Japanese cherry blossom trees have been selected for centuries to produce the most beautiful flowers. Because of this selection most of these trees don't produce edible fruits.

Other cherry trees produce fruits, especially in the region on Yamagata. The sato-nishiki variety is very valued and sold in flat boxes at a very high price. A box of about 80 cherries (500gr.) can cost more than 70 € !
