About "clematis" (tessen - 鉄仙) :

Clematis were introduced to Japan from China during the 17th century. Japanese gardeners made a lot of selection to improve the flowers. Japanese and Chinese clematis were brought back to Europe in the the 18th and 19th century and a lot of hybrids were created between the local species and these new Asian varieties. This is why our common garden clematis have often a Japanese or Chinese parent.
