About "rice cake for New Year" (kagami mochi - 鏡餅) :

Kagami mochi is a rice cake as well as a traditional New Year decoration. It is usually formed of two round rice cakes (mochi) with the smaller one positioned above. On top of them a Japenese bitter orange is placed. Various ornaments are added to decorate, like white and red paper, branches, silver and gold strings, etc.
