About "hanetsuki game" (hanetsuki - 羽根突き, 羽子突き) :

Hanetsuki is a traditional Japanese game similar to badminton. It is played with a wooden paddle called 'hagoita' and a coloured shuttlecock. This game used to be played at New Year. Today the game is less in fashion but the symbol remains. Finely decorated hagoita are sold as New Year decorations and the shuttlecock and paddle are often seen as motifs on textiles, craft, etc.
