About "pears" (nashi - ナシ属) :
The traditional Japanese pear looks like an apple and is called 'nashi'. The 'nashi' is very crunchy, juicy and has a very fine taste.
Japanese didn't find easily Western style pears in their supermarkets until the arrival of the 'la France' variety. 'La France', which seems to have been introduced in Japan at the beginning of the 20th century, only became popular in the 80' when improvements in the quality were made.
