Japanese persiommons (Kaki) ripen in Autumn. Sweet kakis are eaten raw and are a traditionnal symbol of fall.

In winter, when all the tree leaves fall, kakis hanging from bare branches offer a very special sight.

Even if the Japanese developed trees that produce sweet fruit, they still dry the wild sour varieties. These dried fruits were used to sweeten food and also as a medicine. The scene of sour Kaki fruits drying under the eaves of a houses is a typical image of traditional Japan.
