About "geta" (geta - 下駄) :

Geta are traditional Japanese sandals. They have an elevated wooden platform and a fabric thong to hold the feet. These very high platform shoes avoid the kimonos or yukatas to get stained when walking in the street.

Apprentice geisha ('maiko') use very special geta, much higher than everyday ones, and must learn to walk elegantly with them. Young girls wear an other special geta called 'pokuri' with a small bell inside i'ts thick wooden 'sole'.
