Kintaro ame is a Japanese candy that has been around since the Edo period. It is made by layering different colored pieces of candy into a cylindrical face. First large, the cylinder is progressively rolled to reach its final size.
The result is amazing as wherever it is cut, the cylinder's cross section shows the face of Kintaro, a legendary child hero from Japanese folklore. With the same technique, many other designs are produced by Japanese confectioners.
